2012 NewsletterGreetings from Kodiak Island Alaska, Thank you for your interest in hunting and fishing with us. I have been guiding hunting and fishing in Alaska for over 30 years and operating specifically in Ugak Bay for over 25. All of our trips are based out of a 2500 square foot lodge with electricity 24/7, beds, carpet, showers, laundry and all the other comforts of home. We completed a large addition in 2009 and are continually upgrading the facilities and equipment to improve your experience at Ugak Bay. Spring bear hunts went well, but we didn't take a new world record as we did last year. Anthony was on a 10 footer for several days and decided to try for him next year and hope for less rain. Phil turned down several bears, including about a nine footer at 35 feet and is coming this fall to do it again. Bear numbers on Kodiak are at an all time high. Most of my bear hunts are backpack hunts, going out and living right where the bears are. I do a couple of hunts based from the lodge each year also. We have historically averaged bears over nine feet and 26 inch skulls. All brown bear hunts on Kodiak Island are by drawing permit and the odds of drawing have been 70-100%. The application deadline is December 31 for spring and May 31 for fall.
Summer fishing was great as expected. Halibut and salmon were plentiful. The crab was a bit more difficult to find this year. We were not able to catch another 450 pound halibut this year, but there were plenty of fish for the freezer. We usually troll for salmon and drift for halibut. Kings average around 30 lbs and Cohos around 10. I have some openings this August for halibut, kings and cohos that are usually great then. We accommodate up to six fishermen per week with trips running Sunday until Friday. It's a fun trip for families and couples. It's really a great value in this day and age also. Goat hunts were great in 2011. I even managed to take a great old billy myself, to get mounted and put in the lodge. Jack took an excellent 9 ½ " billy just across from the lodge the next week. Brad got on several big billies and will come back for another try after honing his shooting skills. Our goats are excellent trophies in their heavy winter coat. Goat hunts are by drawing permit. The drawing application period ends December 31. Kodiak goat hunting is exceptional. The mountains are only around 3000 feet high and the goats are usually taken between 2000 and 2500 feet. There is a reason more goats are harvested from Kodiak than any other unit in the state. Plan to apply for 2013. Email me for information in Nov-Dec. Fall bear hunts went well. The weather was tough, but Brett and Jeremy took a great 9'4" boar just over the hill from the lodge. Roger hunted w/me and after seeing over 25 bears we got a great 8 ¾' boar on the beach where we needed it. This is one of the classic hunts of the world. Email me anytime for more details on this or any of the adventures I offer. The deer population is doing well. We are in a good population right now. Not low, but not real high either. We had the worst weather I have seen in over 30 years of guiding. Winds over 70 with a couple storms over 100. Four feet of snow brought the deer to the beach and we ended up taking some really great bucks. We saw several others even bigger than we took. Dennis's buck of about 110 was the best for the season, with several others around 100. Our trophy quality continues to be good and we have been fortunate enough to take one of the biggest deer in the annual professional hunters contest five of the last nine years. I 'm booking 2012, 2013 and 2014 for deer hunts. The duck hunting continues to be nothing short of world class. I have set aside the week of November 25-30 specifically for ducks. There are thousands in the bay that time of year. Harliquins, Barrow's Golden Eye, Surf, Common and White winged Scoters, Old Squaw and others provide plenty of shooting opportunity. I got some new Harliquin and Scoter decoys last season and it almost makes it unfair. This is a fantastic collectors hunt all based out of a warm comfortable lodge. We got to use the 17 HMR out on some more fox this year too. Mike got a huge red and Jim got a great silver. I invite you to come to the Alaska you have heard and dreamed about. This is Kodiak Island hunting and fishing at it's finest. There is nowhere else like it in the world. I pride myself on the excellent facilities and equipment, knowledgeable experienced guides and providing the best experience possible for you. Kodiak is one of the most unique places in the world and the hunting and fishing is second to none. Look over my website www.UgakBay.com for more information and email or call me at your convenience.
